Mustang Owners Club of Austin
The Ford Mustang which appeared in April of 1964, means many
things to many people. The car is a tradition in the hearts of both
young and old. In the Mustang Owners Club of Austin (MOCA), we
celebrate the diversity in our many different members, their cars,
and their interests. Please Contact Us with any questions you may

Car of The Month

Patti Pulis’ 2001 Mustang GT ConvertibleEvery car seems to have a story; here’s yet another one:
My husband Brian came-up with a juicy rationalization recently, “Why not
buy an inexpensive later-model convertible that is turn-key ready to drive
while I perform some longer term maintenance on the early-model convertible
Mustang?” To say the least, I was not thrilled with the idea; my initial
reaction was “I don’t want to sell my old convertible, I really like it.”
Then attempting to ally my concerns, he told me he was not suggesting
selling my other convertible but rather adding another car that would be
easier to jump-in with the kids, put down the top and go or put up the top
and turn-on the AC when the heat of day was in full force. I was hesitant
but I had a feeling he would not likely give-up so easily.
After several weeks of silence on the topic, on Father’s day, out of the
blue, Brian asked if I would quickly come test-drive a 1997 convertible
with him that was for sale near our home. It was not “calling me” but
hitting me with the request on Father’s Day; it seemed too difficult to
turn him down. So away we went!
The car drove nicely and I was a bit surprised that I enjoyed the styling
since I’ve always been so taken with my early model car. Brian was touting
the benefits of the air bags and the optional ABS. I agreed, and in a
moment of weakness, told Brian that _if_ we were to purchase another
convertible, I was indifferent about having an automatic or manual
transmission but I would prefer leather interior and with a red exterior.
This car had both; I saw a new determination in his eyes.
Brian spoke to the owner a couple of times but believed the price was a bit
inflated and was concerned because the car was apparently repainted.
Another period of silence on the topic began but I could tell my husband
was “sneaking around” hitting Craig’s List around the area to identify
other possible candidates.
Then, seemly out of the blue, he did it again. While in Waco at a family
reunion, Brian asked if we could stop in Temple on the way home to check
out another car. After he explained that he had emailed the owner earlier
and just received a response, I agreed saying we could if it didn’t take
too long. Many price negation calls later, we struck a deal with the car’s
original owner on our “new” car - a 2001 Laser Red, GT Premium convertible
with tan leather interior, automatic transmission and a Mach 460 sound
system.
Brian had a great-time running to Temple with Charlie Schlund to retrieve
the car (Thanks Charlie!) and the entire family really enjoys it. Now,
let’s see when he gets around to that other “maintenance” he spoke about!
:-)
Thanks for choosing our 2001 Mustang as MOCA’s Car of the Month.
